Analyst, Trade Execution and Operations


Job Overview

The Analyst, Trade Execution and Operations role uniquely spans front-office trade execution, middle and back-office functions. The Analyst, Trade Execution and Operations intimately understands the full trade execution lifecycle. They execute commodity derivatives trading, primarily in the energy and softs markets. Additional execution responsibilities may include execution within the livestock and grain & oilseed markets. The role is highly collaborative across the team, ensuring efficient and timely trade execution, position reconciliation, and risk management reporting.


Reporting Structure

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Finance and Operations

Backup to: Analyst, Trade Execution and Operations (Livestock and Grain & Oilseed)

Collaborates with: Senior Analysts, middle and back-office personnel


Key Responsibilities

Front Office

Trade Execution

  • Manage and execute order flow from team members; validate with third-parties

  • Exercise discretion to maximize executed volumes and reduce slippage by improving execution prices

  • Utilize available system tools and algorithms to construct and execute complex trade structures

  • Manage relationships with brokers, members of exchanges, etc. to improve market liquidity

Collaboration with Sector Analysts

  • Review open orders and daily strategy; communicate trade orders’ statuses throughout the day

  • Ensure trade communication processes are executed in accordance with defined procedures

  • Monitor markets and provide feedback on opportunities for improvement in execution or strategy enhancements during trading sessions

  • Partner with sector analysts in design of optimal execution strategy, tools, systems, and processes for new products

Middle Office

Daily Reconciliation and Reporting

  • Reconcile trades and positions between internal reporting systems and external parties

  • Troubleshoot reconciliation breaks and resolve settlement price discrepancies accordingly

  • Provide intra-session portfolio performance updates

  • Identify process inefficiencies and implement improvements as warranted

Risk Management

  • Identify and report trade order errors, minimizing potential losses

  • Assist in formalizing and enforcing internal controls and policy related to the trading process

  • Monitor trade-related risk thresholds to ensure compliance; notify group, Sr. Analysts and CIO, as needed

  • Monitor positions limits as set by the exchanges and FCMs

  • Draft process narratives and other required regulatory deliverables as needed

Back Office

Operations and Systems Management

  • Implement new systems or upgrades to existing applications as needed

  • Be key stakeholder in long-term initiatives to streamline and modernize trading operations through process improvements to current tools and/or replacement with new software solutions as business scales

  • Support testing and implementation of future strategies as required


Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance

  • 1-3 years of relevant business experience in professional setting; experience in trading strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure in fast paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with others

  • Self-motivated and proactive in addressing areas for improvement

  • Possessing ability to work independently

  • Ability to coordinate and balance multiple tasks and stakeholders simultaneously

  • Passion for trading, markets, and investing

  • Knowledge of commodity futures and options markets preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience using Microsoft Office products, specifically Microsoft Excel

  • Experience with Bloomberg preferred



Senior Analyst, Livestock


Job Overview

As a member of the trading team at Broadview Capital Holdings (BCH), the Senior Analyst, Livestock will be responsible for management of the company’s livestock commodity positions, including lean hogs, live cattle, and feeder cattle, with input and oversight from the Chief Investment Officer. This position will have primary responsibility for the company’s livestock P&L. Duties will be primarily focused on portfolio management, fundamental research and analysis, industry networking, and strategy and tool development.


Reporting Structure

Direct report to: COO with trading strategy and risk management reporting to CIO

Collaborates with: Director of Food & Ag Research, Trade Execution and Operations Analyst, as well as various individuals across BCH


Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

  • Manage trade positions in the livestock sector which currently includes futures positions in CME lean hogs, live cattle, and feeder cattle

  • Use all available resources, including the Company’s proprietary models and tools, to identify attractive risk/return trades and build a balanced position in collaboration with the CIO

  • Work with the CIO to develop a long-term strategy to manage trades through lifecycle from entry to exit

  • Use market knowledge to identify discretionary/non-core strategy opportunities and make recommendations for execution to the CIO

  • Develop daily trading strategy for entry and exit of livestock positions, including intra-day changes and management of hedges and exposures

  • Monitor market news and data for information impacting the portfolio and available opportunities

  • Work with the Trade Execution & Operations Analyst to optimize trade execution and minimize slippage

  • Complete operational tasks associated with accurate reporting and reconciliation of the livestock portfolio

  • Build and manage relationships with brokers to access and develop liquidity in the livestock markets

  • Support the CIO in continuous improvement of the trade investment process

  • Participate in capital allocation and portfolio discussions regarding positioning and available opportunities across the livestock, grain & oilseed, energy and softs sectors as required

  • Participate in risk committee meetings as required

Fundamental Research and Analysis

  • Develop a deep understanding of livestock markets and stay abreast of current market fundamentals and research

  • Perform fundamental research and analysis to support portfolio management decisions and identify attractive risk/return opportunities

  • Build, maintain and improve livestock supply, demand and price forecasting models for hogs and cattle

  • In collaboration with the Director, Food & Agriculture Research evaluate and manage third-party research and data subscriptions, identifying opportunities based on gaps in current data and analysis

  • Build standard reports and analysis for internal use

  • Lead drafting and publishing of quarterly Hog & Pigs Summary for distribution to pork industry network

Industry Networking

  • Develop and nurture mutually beneficial relationships within the livestock industry that bring value to BCH and its network by enhancing each party’s ability to identify opportunities and risks

  • Attend industry conferences and events to build industry network

  • Assist the CIO and the Director, Food & Agriculture Research in organizing meetings to host industry contacts and external stakeholders to discuss current and future market developments

Strategy and Tool Development

  • Identify new trading strategy and tool development opportunities

  • Work with the Director, Food & Agriculture Research and the technology team to advise on evaluation, development and implementation of new tools and strategies, as well as incremental improvements to existing tools and strategies

  • Enhance toolkit for livestock sector through integration of fundamental data into models and trade strategy development

  • Implement new company tools that add value and enhance the capabilities of the livestock sector

  • Support the CIO and COO in the long-term strategic growth, development and planning in the livestock strategy

Consulting

  • Serve as an external consultant to strategic relationships in the livestock industry as required


Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance in finance, economics or a technical field (engineering, math, or hard science)

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in commodity trading or merchandising role, or similar role in an agricultural business with significant exposure to commodity trading, experience in livestock trading strongly preferred

  • Understanding of commodity trading and fundamental analysis

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency and demonstrated experience in the Microsoft Office suite of products

  • Experience with a programming language (VBA, Python, R) preferred, but not required

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with others

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment

  • An entrepreneurial spirit, including the ability to work hard, learn quickly, develop creative solutions, eliminate barriers and deliver results with minimal resources

  • Curious with a deep desire to learn
